Book Information
A moving novel of loss, regret, denial, and discovery on Galveston Island, from the author of Opal’s Story and The Ember Months.
Birdie has lived to regret many of her decisions, but she doesn’t regret offering a stranger, Jude, shelter from an approaching hurricane. Their serendipitous meeting will form a bond that will change their lives forever.
In a character driven story with memories of the protests and inequality plaguing the 1960's, Birdie’s reached middle age and questions her life. Jude is striking out on her own, but has been derailed by a fatal accident claiming her only friend. Although their backgrounds and lives are vastly different, they recognize something in the other that forges a friendship.
As their relationship solidifies, they share glimpses of their pasts. Birdie is a product of the '60's, an aging hippie, with a series of resentments. She had a sheltered childhood in an upper class family. Her parents longed to see her make the Texas Dip at the Mardi Gras ball. Jude, however, entered foster care as an infant. Her parents, victims of a murder/suicide, left her and her siblings orphaned and separated.
There is something about their connection that strikes Birdie as familiar. Can souls know each other in different lives? Birdie struggles with the awareness that she has had regrets and hasn't lived an authentic life, while Jude faces an uncomfortable truth about her own. It has all the feels.

My Review
4☆ A Heart Warming and Compelling Read!
Birdie & Jude is a Warm and Compelling Story about Friendship, Loss, Life, Tragedy, Strength, Differences and overcoming them.
When Birdie takes her dog for a walk on the beach, her dog Ollie leads her to a young girl collapsed in the sand.
She appears to be hurt and When She finally comes round, Birdie notices she has blood on her. Very concerned for her safety Birdie asks Jude to come back to her home to clean up.
Reluctantly Jude agrees and she begins to tell Birdie what she remembers and how she comes to have blood on her.
Jude stays with Birdie whilst she heals. The two are very different and as the story progresses so does their friendship. Both have had a difficult and painful past but seem to find peace together.
I loved Birdie, she is very much an eccentric loveable character and her love for Ollie the dog melts my heart. Not many people would offer a young stranger a place to stay especially if they was caked in blood. But Birdie opened her heart and home to Jude which was really heart warming and inspiring.
Birdie & Jude is very much a character driven story, it's a little slower paced as the story of these two women unfold and it did take me a little longer to fully absorb myself into the story, but once I did I was enthralled.
It's a compelling and poignant read about friendship, loss, tragedy, secrets and comfort.
The Characters are beautifully created and written.
There was just one thing that I wasn't Keen on and that is the Book Cover, it doesn't really catch my eye and I'm not sure it captures the beauty of this book, but this is just my personal feelings.
I would definitely recommend reading Birdie & Jude especially if you like womens fiction, and a strong friendship story between two very different women, then this is definitely the book for you!
