Book Information

Do we really know our friends?

Known since school as ‘The A Team,’ Nick, Dan, Jen and Will have been best friends for years. They’re just ordinary guys, aren’t they? Then why does Nick and Lisa’s wedding hurl their lives into chaos?

Who is standing on the window ledge, threatening to jump? What deeply hidden family secret is exposed? Why does a sexual advance snowball? And which of them is telling lies?

As their net of secrets tighten, the A team soon realise that none of them are being as honest with themselves – or with each other – as they think they are…

Will their friendship survive?

Tense, disturbing and clever, My Husband’s Lies is the second domestic noir from Caroline England, perfect for fans of Lucy Clarke and Erin Kelly.

‘I was gripped immediately - perfect for fans of Into the Water by Paula Hawkins’

My Review

4☆ Full of Secrets, Lies and Deceit!

My Husband's Lies is a book about secrets, betrayal, friendship, lies, relationships and affairs.

I had mixed feelings when I was reading My Husband's Lies.
Firstly the amount of characters that was introduced at the start was slightly overwhelming.
I have to admit it got me very confused and I had to keep skipping back to try to get my head round who was who.

There are several main characters.
The main ones are 'The A Team' ... best friends since school.... Dan, Nick, Jen and Will.
There partners Geri, Lisa, Ian, Penny and Will's brother Seb.

Ok so each of the couple's have their issues.
They are all so desperately flawed.
To be honest there wasn't one character I particularly liked or related to as most of them was self conceited and only out for themselves.
But that was the point I wasn't meant to like them.
Each character had their own agenda.
However Caroline did create characters that knew just how to manipulate and taunt perfectly. Keeping the reader hooked into the drama.
It was like watching a soap opera.

So much so the opening scene we see Wills wife Penny attempting to jump off a window ledge at Nick and Lisa's wedding..... But Why you ask?.... you will need to read it to find out.

For me the title didn't really fit with the story as it wasn't one husband that was lying. They all was lying. From Affairs, sexuality confusion, mental health the whole book was based on lies and deceit.

What I loved about this book was how the best friends and their partners/ families related to each other.
How their relationships weaved together. From over protective parent's, stroppy teenager/ kids, A Mum to Be, a protective brother, to parent's that favoured one child over another it was interesting to see how they coped.
How they went about there day to day life not truly knowing what was going on behind the scenes.

Do you truly ever really know your best friends?
Or what happens behind closed doors?
How long can a secret stay buried before it comes crashing down?
These are all the questions Caroline had me thinking about whilst reading My Husband's Lies.

Each chapter is told by one of the four members of the 'A Team ' including Penny's liaisons with her therapist. I enjoyed this because each of the stories told weaved perfectly together.

Despite the fact there was a lot of characters. I did really enjoy reading My Husband's Lies.
Caroline created an engrossing storyline with a cast of multi-layered, Flawed yet challenging characters, that weaved deceit, secrets and lies into the mix perfectly.

If you enjoy Dramas with a thriller feel, with a fairly large cast of characters, then you will really enjoy My Husband's Lies.

Extract

The champagne cork cracks like a firework. Covering her ears, she shrinks away from the hotel bar, trying to remember why she’s there. A reception, yes a wedding reception; she went to the ladies’.
‘There you are! You disappeared. They’re taking the photographs now. Are you coming outside?’
She puts down the glass and turns. It’s him, it’s the husband she loves far too much. His jacket is missing, his aftershave’s strong.
Holding her breath, she listens. Pitter patter, pitter patter. ‘But it’s raining.’
Staring as though he knows, his eyebrows knit. ‘It stopped ages ago. Everyone else is outside. Are you coming?’
His tone is too loud, his waistcoat too bright.
He’s lying, he’s lying, she knows when he’s lying.
And the voice is still there; she can hear it quite clearly.
Pitter patter, pitter patter, listen to the rain!
Pitter patter, pitter patter, on the windowpane.
God, she hasn’t heard that rhyme for years. Not her mum, surely? Yes her mum, before she grew bad: holding her close, singing softly and stroking her hair. ‘My perfect little poppet. Such a very good girl!’
‘Hey dreamer, are you—’
She jerks at the sound. It’s her husband, still gazing, his eyes telling lies. She just needs a few moments to make herself perfect. ‘You go ahead. I need the loo. I’ll be out in a minute.’
She watches his strides, then straightens her dress. Oh God, what the hell? Marks on her skirt, splatters on the silk. Holding her breath, she crouches down to inspect them. They dilate, creep and grow as she stares. Surely not blood? It wasn’t her fault; she didn’t mean to hurt anybody.
After a moment she blinks. No, silly! Just water from the ladies’ tap. Or the spray of champagne! More likely the downfall. Pitter patter, pitter patter. She told him it was raining.
