Put your dog in a book, they said…
Guest post by Virginia Heath
If you who follow me on social media will know I have a dog. A mischievous yellow Labrador Retriever named Trevor. Aside from regularly posting on my timeline, Trevor is incredibly intelligent, loving, full of life, swims like a fish and is completely obsessed with balls. He is, as his name suggests, truly excellent at retrieving… not so good at giving things back. Some would call him untrainable, but I prefer to think my crazy mutt simply marches to the beat of his own drum- a bit like me. I love the quirky blonde barking mad diva to bits.
Trevor’s loyal fans often ask the same question: When are you going to put him in a book? So I decided to appease them put him in The Disgraceful Lord Gray. Easy, right?
Wrong!
It turns out Labradors weren’t called Labradors in 1820, they were called St Johns. Nor were they yellow, they were black. The first yellow Labrador didn’t come along till 1899- 79 years after my King’s Elite series is set. Oh, and did I mention that the breed were confined to their home in Newfoundland, Canada back in the Regency where they helped the fishing fleet? Swimming out to drag in the nets in their gentle pointed mouths. Whilst that explains Trevor’s love of water, it did mean I had to find a way for my hero to have gone there to fetch one and bring it back- which involved creating quite a specific backstory for Lord Gray.
Then, of course, Trevor is a modern name. I had to find a similar sounding word that was around at the time and find a jolly good reason why my hero would call his dog that. And I had to do all this before I wrote the first line of the book, creating a complex storyline about a romance involving smugglers. A storyline where the sidekick is a dog- who may or may not save the day…

Author Bio
When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Fortunately, the lovely people at Harlequin Mills & Boon took pity on her and decided to publish her romances, but it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
