Excerpt
The police found a young woman, thought to be in her middle twenties beaten and left for dead in her car. Her face was crushed by some object that displaced her nose to the right, knocked out her front teeth, and she also sustained a gaping wound across her forehead. Her roommate reported her missing, and forty-eight hours after the last shift, the police found her in an abandoned lot. The victim was dressed in a nurse's uniform with a name pin identifying her as the missing woman. The cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma. Her pocketbook and telephone were missing, and from the blood spatter pattern, the phone and purse might have been covered with the victim's blood and possibly the assailants. The police hadn’t determined yet if there was a sexual assault.
“Now read the news clips,” Mary said.
Of course, the news sensationalized the story based more on gossip and innuendo than fact. It described Marsha Anderson as a young woman who was a registered nurse that worked in the hospital’s cardio-thoracic intensive care unit. From all accounts, she had just come off the evening shift when someone may have overpowered her and driven her to an abandoned area. Once there she was beaten beyond recognition, and damage to the body continued postmortem. Although not confirmed, it likely involved two assailants. The article laid out information about education and job history, and concluded she was a well-liked nurse whose life had been tragically cut short.
“So, what leads the police to Dr. Blackwell?” I asked.
“Hospital scuttlebutt is that he and Ms. Anderson were personally involved. Apparently, it was a turbulent relationship that had taken a turn for the worse. The police printed her car, and Dr. Blackwell's prints were in there, but not fresh prints in the blood. No surprise to find them if they were romantically involved,” Dalia said.
“And?”
“The problem is he can't, or won't, account for his time when this occurred. The hospital cameras place him inside the parking deck within five minutes of Marsha Anderson leaving and then he's gone,” she said.
“Are they charging him?” I asked.
“There has been no arrest yet, but it doesn't look good that they want to bring him in for a second interview so quickly. I could use another set of ears and eyes evaluating his demeanor during the interview we have scheduled to take place shortly. Are you ready to put your skills to work?” Dalia asked, leaning toward me.
“Of course,” I stated with a bounce of excitement.
“I want to emphasize that I don't take cases unless I'm comfortable that my client is telling the truth. I'm not about pimping my service to help some scumbag find a technicality to flee justice. I'll hold the state to their duty to prove a crime was committed. That's the bedrock of our system. However, when I get an acquittal, I want it to be because the jury believes my client is innocent. Not simply that the state for whatever reason didn't present a good case,” Dalia preached.
It sounded idealistic, but she had put her time in, and she deserved to take the cases she wanted.
Me? My right and left shoulder devil battled it out. If this case walked into a law firm I owned, one part of me would take the case, no questions asked, I know the retainer would be enormous. I could live off that money for three years. However, the other part said this was trouble and where there's smoke there's fire. In my mind, he was guilty and would have to prove his innocence to me—quite the conundrum. Either way, I wanted a front-row seat to this train wreck of a case.
