Star of Hope – Inspiration by Moira McPartlin

“With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon.”  Ellon Musk

When I wrote Ways of the Doomed, book #1 of the Sun Song Trilogy, I decided that the World Wide Web would no long existed. Unlike today’s teenagers who have iPads and mobile phones, my main character Sorlie and his pals have only communicator wrist bands, some virtual games and a central database called FuB. All communication and information in Sorlie’s world is controlled by the State.
The reason I did this was because, at the time of writing Ways of the Doomed, there were some large terrorist threats in the world and lots of speculation about cyber-attacks.  I was also aware of the influence of social media and, although it wasn’t until a few years later when the term was coined, “fake news” was already becoming obvious.  I am so glad I made this decision early on in the trilogy because as the years progressed the paranoia around the WWW has worsened. In recent years we have seen major public systems like the UKs National Health Service and HM Revenue and Customs subject to hacking as well data breaches in large global tech companies like Yahoo.
More worrying are the recent allegations that some major powers have used social media to influence voters in election campaigns.
All these issues led me to the conclusion that shutting the internet down is maybe not such a farfetched idea. But there are other high tech developments fighting for my attention.
The main theme of Star of Hope is around artificial intelligence.  As the quote at the beginning of this piece shows global influencers like Ellon Musk are worried.  Leading scientist, Stephen Hawking, famously said in 2014 "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race." These quotes were real inspirations for me when I came to write Star of Hope.
Another influencer was discovering the extent of industrial scale server farms around the world and the amount of energy needed to run these repositories of our information. ‘The Cloud’ is not some fluffy white thing that sort of exists somewhere in the air. Every piece of information we see on our phones and laptops is stored somewhere and that comes at a huge energy cost to the environment. Can we really afford that in this world of diminishing resources?
In Star of Hope we discover exactly why the World Wide Web was shut down. Our heroes, Sorlie and Ishbel, travel to the dry arid lands of southern Esperaneo to try and work out what is best for their revolution and for the native population.
To write fiction set in the future you need to look at history and what is happening in the world around you.  I have created a piece of fiction but right at the heart of that fiction is the big
‘WHAT IF’
