Boise Montague’s life in Los Angeles has fallen apart. After his wife dies, he returns to the tiny island where he grew up. Unfortunately, coming home doesn’t bring him the peace he’s looking for.
Things have changed drastically since his last visit. The island has moved on and so have the people he once knew. When Boise tries to find the one friend he thinks he can count on to be there for him, he’s confronted with another death. A murder. A murder that the police did not think important enough to investigate thoroughly.
Boise wants answers. He enlists a local reporter named Dana, who has theories of her own, to help him dig deeper.
With not much left to lose, a bone to pick with the justice system, and a relentless partner, Boise sets out to do what the police would not: solve the murder of Jeffrey Black.

Bumbling Boise

I get a lot of comments that Boise Montague is kind of a bumbling, drunken Winnie the Pooh character (my favorite review compared Boise to Pooh and Dana to Tigger—wish I’d thought of that!). The Boise character is a reaction to the current trend in many popular crime stories to make the main character virtually perfect. Don’t get me wrong, there are still lots of realistic characters out there, however, the biggest successes recently feel like they are populated by these over-achievers with big hearts and bigger…well, you know.
The perfect protagonist. I loved The Da Vinci Code and Inferno for the interesting premise, the settings, and the historical facts. Fascinating reads, except for one annoying flaw: Robert Langdon. The guy is the leading symbologist in the world. He’s good-looking. He’s athletic, finding time to swim laps every day. He eats well and never seems to use the bathroom. He shows respect for women and his peers. He demonstrates humility at the right times, etc.
This type of character drives me batty because they don’t exist or are so rare as to be unrelatable. I can appreciate that we’d all like to be this guy, but ultimately (although I’ve read every book by Brown except Origin) he comes up a little hollow for my taste. Obviously the public loves this character, but for my literary tastes, I like someone more relatable. So, I swung the other way and made my guy painfully, haplessly normal. He’s a bit overweight, not always right about anything, and he even dresses poorly. He’s a schmuck, but he’s trying, like the rest of us. I could have listened to “One of Us” by Joan Osborne while creating Boise. You don’t have to make characters realistic, that’s part of the joy of writing, they can be whatever you want, however for my writing, I prefer characters who are not so together.
Boise Montague has no idea what the hell he’s doing. He does not work until midnight, his nose buried in research. He does not exercise regularly. He drinks. He gets confused. He says the wrong thing constantly and pisses people off. I suppose he’s like a James M. Cain character, with a better heart. He wants to do well. He wants to get over what ails him, but he keeps slipping. He does get back up…eventually…and tries again. His background is also not the most impressive with only a modicum of investigative skills gathered from an ex-cop he befriends at a seminar and a brief stint working to gather evidence for a law firm. Other stories have people with vast resumes that make them out to be the smartest and toughest hombres who ever walked the earth. Boise has resilience and a heart that keeps ticking after a licking, but otherwise, he’s making it up as he goes along. His biggest weapon is common sense.
An example of this is when he first meets Dana and helps her with Professor Tyfoe, a homeless guy who keeps crashing in the newspaper’s basement. Dana is about to call the cops and Boise offers to take the professor out for a bite. It’s difficult to be angry at someone when they are trying to feed you. Boise instinctively knows this because he loves to eat. He uses the bathroom. He has colitis. He has moments of drunken darkness. He needs his friends to dig him out of a hole of his own making sometimes. He cannot do it all himself. He is one of us and we are often better than we think.

Author Bio
Gene Desrochers hails from a dot in the Caribbean Sea called St. Thomas. He grew up with minimal supervision and free-roaming animals in a guesthouse that also served as a hospital during wartime. He has spent his life steadily migrating west, and now finds himself in Los Angeles with a beautiful wife, cats, and kids. After a lifetime of writing and telling short stories, he ventured into the deep end, publishing his first novel, Dark Paradise in 2018. If you ask, he will regale you with his Caribbean accent and tennis prowess.
