Excerpt

Introduction:

A.D.71 ‘Borderland’ Brigante Territory, Northern Britannia Lorcan of Garrigill has saved a Selgovae female enemy from a wild boar attack but when he tries to seduce her, he’s mystified by her reactions. The mature warrior- woman violently rejects his advances, indeed manages a minor wound to his shoulder, but that’s not what confuses him. She seems neither priestess, nor a normal woman of her tribe. But he has no idea what to do with her now, since he cannot bring himself to kill her…
“Cross!”
When the Selgovae woman picked her way to the centre, he watched the awkward raising of her bound hands, her lips moving in silent invocation. His derisory laugh startled the birds nearby sending them upwards in a flurry of beating wings. His taunt was hurtful, yet he could not quell his nastiness.
“You do well to pray to Sequanna, though has the goddess not rejected you too long, since you remain un-seeded by a man?”
The woman’s piercing glitter chastised him. Raw resentment, and another impossible-to-suppress current, flared across to him before she lowered her head. There had been the tiniest flicker of satisfaction in her gaze which disconcerted him, as did the twitch of enjoyment now curving her lips. Lorcan’s brows knotted, unwilling to believe she was stealing a march on him in some unfathomable way as though her knowledge of the future was infinitely greater than his. This striking woman had secrets he could not wait to reveal.
He had thought her attractive before, now she was even more so. He wanted to smother that seductive smile with his lips because she was a temptress, a harebell-blue eyed enticement swathed in deep bronze hair. What thought made those lips curve in satisfaction? Treading over the stones, he grasped the leash and drew her around. “Do you mock me, woman?” She slowly shook her head, her smirk diminishing, and the sparkle of her eyes like a light rain on a patch of borage flowers. “Why do you laugh in such fashion?”
“An cΓΉ!” Her mutter was breathy and low.
His grip tightened. “Say again!”
“You would not wish to know. My thoughts would not likely please you.” Her challenge was insolent.
 “Tell me or—”
“You will what, because you are a pig? There is no need for more violence, Brigante.” Her head shook a slow tempting pout.
“Brigante! I am Lorcan, son of Tully, the Chief of Garrigill.” He echoed her accusatory tone, exhaling deeply, whispering over her trembling mouth. For seconds neither moved. Lorcan felt a strumming tension reverberating between them, his huffs of breath mingling with hers. Then, unable to bear her so near he thrust her aside, turning instead to the meat he needed to gut.
Tumbling off the stone she was perched upon, the woman griped when her foot twisted. Her leg jarred against a jagged rock embedded in the water before she landed bottom first on the pebbled riverbed with a yelping splash, the action wrenching the leash from his wrist. Her wheeze of fury suggested many grievances. Scrambling up, she dripped towards him her bound hands held outstretched.
“Release me, Brigante, so that I can see what damage you have inflicted.”
Lorcan’s knife flashed, releasing her in an instant. The water beneath her was a livid pink – and none of it boar blood. He muttered oaths while hacking the pelt from the beast before slashing at the remains. Whipping out the entrails, he wiped pieces he wished to keep with furious fervour since he had not intended the woman harm, but knew he was culpable. Fighting against his conscience, he was unable to mete out the retribution the warrior-woman clearly deserved for wounding him. An unaccustomed restless, frustrated irritation overwhelmed him.
Out of the water at the far side of the ford, his Selgovae captive nursed her bloodied and ripped skin, for the foot bindings she wore were not high enough to offer her protection from this kind of injury.
His sword whacked through the carcass of the boar, quartering it, while he watched her rub the wound lightly with ferns from the banking, then she turned on hands and knees and tore out some moss. Closing his eyes, he breathed deep and willed his body not to respond, but he could not prevent his eyes straying again. A small pad made, she applied it to the gash, using a leg binding to secure it tight. All the while she muttered low oaths, whether to him, or Sequanna, he could not tell. It mattered not; she remained the most alluring woman he had ever met.
The goddess Sequanna did not play fair with him either. His thoughts were an over- bubbling cauldron, his hands an unconscious butcher of the boar meat. What must he do with this female who continuously provoked and aroused him? And who now swamped him with guilt? He should have killed her earlier. Much more goading, though, and he would be sure to wring that delicious neck, but first he would take her, whoever she was, and whatever her state.
