Moving around a lot can be a tough, but it’s comforting to know that a good bookshop can make
any town or city feel like home. Here, award winning author Hannah Lynn, tells us about some
of her favourite bookshop haunts in the world.
During my four years living in Bangkok I was a younger, newlywed and pre-baby, by which I
mean I had far more time to spend reading and far more money to spend on books! Nearly
every weekend my husband and I would inevitably end up in Kinokuniya, the mammoth
bookshop in one of the central malls. Perhaps because the enormity of the place, it never felt
overcrowded. There was always a quiet nook you could find and hide yourself away in. I’ll be
honest, one of my weaknesses was the big tables they would stack with the Just in books. I
would always head to the counter with only two or three books in my hand, but by the time I
went to pay that number would have doubled. When we moved to Kuala Lumpur it didn’t take us
long to hunt down the Kinokuniya there either, nestled beneath the iconic twin towers, but it
never quite got to us the way that one in Bangkok did.
Chiang Mai is full of fantastic second hand bookshops. Some are smaller than the kitchen in our
first tiny flat and chock full from floor to ceiling, others with two floors and perfectly curated. Ten
years ago I spent multiple days in Chiang Mai, simply moving from one bookshop to the next.
For me there’s something about second hand books; to know that someone else has read and
loved the story that you are holding in your hands. Given the choice I’d by everything second
hand if I could. (I’d probably also live in Chiang Mai if I had the chance!)
Talking of second hand bookshops I discovered a wonderful one in Melbourne. I was there on a
three day course and I’d just finished the book I was reading. The shop was hidden away in a
basement and it was everything you’d want from an old bookshop, with narrow aisles and
shadowy corners to get lost in. I bought two books there, one for me, and one for a homeless
woman who had asked for a book to read.
One bookshop that isn’t new but which holds great memories for me is Waterstones in
Amsterdam. The week before I had taken my first steps into the world of Neil Gaiman (if you’ve
read any other post by me you’ll know how that went!) and had bought the Ocean At The End
Of The Lane. Immediately in love, I had gone straight back out and purchased Neverwhere, at
another Waterstones, in the UK. I was one day in when we boarded the plane and I realised,
heartbroken, that I had left it by the bedside table. We were on our way back to Malaysia and
work and I had no idea when I next get a chance to go shopping. All other plans of canal tours
and the like were cancelled as I hunted down a bookshop to repurchase the book. Still to this
day, Neverwhere, remains the only book I have two copies of.
There are more I could talk about. Seoul, Vienna, so many places and so many bookshops. I
guess I’ll just have to do a little more travelling to see them all.

Hannah Lynn is an award-winning novelist. Publishing her first book, Amendments – a dark, dystopian speculative fiction novel, in 2015, she has since gone on to write The Afterlife of Walter Augustus, a contemporary fiction novel with a supernatural twist – which won the 2018 Kindle Storyteller Award and the Gold Medal for Best Adult Fiction ebook at this year’s IPPY Awards – and the delightfully funny and poignant Peas and Carrots series.
While she freely moves between genres, her novels are recognisable for their character driven stories and wonderfully vivid description.
